Incumbent Walter and 3 challengers take GOP Cabarrus school board primary

Incumbent Rob Walter was one of four Republican Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education candidates that will be moving on to the general election in November.

Greg Mills received the most votes with 13,395, followed by Melanie Freeman with 12,302, Catherine Bonds Moore with 11,869 and Walter with 11,367.

The four Republicans will face off in November against four Democratic candidates — incumbent Keshia Sandidge, Rob Cerulo, Namu Kachroo and Mishell Williams — for the right to four seats on the board.

Mills received the most Election Day (9,937) and early voting ballots (3,275), which helped him beat out Freeman, the second highest vote-getter, by almost 1,100 votes

“Our local school board races always feature a knowledgeable and passionate group of individuals,” Mills told the paper. “This year’s primary was no exception. I’m humbled to have been considered alongside those people and elected to move forward into November’s general election.” He added: “The strong showing of support in last night’s primary results indicates that the message of my campaign is resonating with the people of Cabarrus County. Republicans and unaffiliated voters agree that our children can succeed when our schools focus on doing the fundamentals well.”

Walter, who was first elected to the Cabarrus County Board of Education in 2012 and was reelected in 2016 and 2020, is seeking his fourth term. “I’m very appreciative for all those that voted, volunteered, or supported my reelection efforts and we do get to move forward to the November General Election,” Walter told the paper.

He added that Republicans have a good slate of candidates and “CCS stakeholders should take time to get to know and support them in November.”

Moore was also excited to progress to the November election. “A big thanks to my family, friends and voters for supporting me in this primary,” Moore said. “Looking forward to another win in November and being the voice for our community, parents, school staff and students.”

The other candidates in the race were Bubba Hartsell (6,963 votes) and Amanda Wortman (6,514 votes).
